Get started with IDM
The first thing you need to do is download IDM. To get it, just go to the official site for Internet Download Manager and click "Download Free Version" on the top, right hand corner of the web page. There are 2 versions: a standard version and a portable version. The portable version can be run without installing it so that's what we'll use in this tutorial. Click “Download” to download your copy of IDM. Then choose to save it somewhere on your computer where you know that you can find it again easily.
Once you’ve downloaded the installer, locate it and run it like you would any other program on your computer. If you’re using Windows XP or Vista, just double-click on the file and it should work. On other versions of Windows, first click “Next” in the Welcome window that starts IDM is running. It will ask if you want to close all your browser windows before continuing. Select “Yes” and click “Next” again when it asks for permission to continue. When the install window comes up, click “Next” again and let IDM install itself on your computer.

You can choose where to install it or leave it in the default location which will be the Program Files folder. It takes about a minute or two to install. When it is done, you’ll see the window below. Click “Close” and IDM will run automatically when you log into Windows again.
The first time that you run IDM, it will run a setup routine to get everything ready for you. This takes about 15 seconds or so and then it will bring up the welcome screen above where we started this tutorial.
